Little Aussie Bakery: Pretty Good for Gluten-Free

But thank God I don’t have Celiac’s disease.  I was missing my Houston favorite, Empire Cafe, so I searched Yelp and Urbanspoon and it seemed like Little Aussie Bakery would be a good substitute.  A hippie-ish feel in a yuppy-ish part of town – yayyyy!  Well, I didn’t read the parts about how it’s a gluten-free establishment.  In fact, you cannot even bring in any items that might have gluten in them (not that I carry around a pile of donuts and buns).  I guess people with gluten sensitivities will steal your baked goods and eat them?  Or the gluten dust will turn them into stone?  Not sure.

As soon as we sat down and looked at the menu, I realized my mistake — this was a gluten-free place .. and their specialty is bread.  Hmm… well, everything’s worth a try, plus we were hungry.  The menu said something to the effect of, “not bad for gluten-free is not good enough.”  And, I will say this was better than average gluten-free… but I’ll still take flour any day.

no flour

Back to our brunch.  Even though the place was small and not full, it took a long time before anyone realized that we were sitting there, but once we were noticed, the service was very friendly.  We were brought a basket of bread and butter.  The bread, gluten-free of course, was actually quite nice. A little on the chewy side, but very much like regular bread.

not bad.

I ordered the waffle with ice cream and J had the pasta bake and salad.  It took about 20 minutes or so for the food come out, and we were pleasantly surprised.  We have had gluten-free items in the past because we have some family that has Celiac’s – and compared to some of the stuff we’ve tried, this was pretty good!  J really liked the pasta bake, I found  it a little bland.  The waffle was decent, but too sweet (J disagrees and thinks it was really good).  The ice cream was good, but I think all ice cream is gluten-free (unless it has delicious things in it like cookie chunks).

I would definitely recommend this place to those with gluten-sensitivities/allergies and Celiac’s disease.
