Farewell to Smileys: New Rating System

I was very fond of my “smiley face” rating system.  However, J (and others) pointed out that it didn’t give much room to rate.  The old system didn’t allow us the flexibility to call out great food or service… or to point out a lacking ambience.  The new system is a simple 1 to 10 rating of Atmosphere, Service and Food.  The 1 to 10 scale is pretty standard with 1 being terrible and 10 being totally fabulous.

The overall score is the average of the three, and each criterion is scored using the average of all diners’ scores.  For instance, the other day, we took my parents to dinner.. and all four of us gave our numerical rating for each criterion.  In this case, my mom and J gave the food a score of 6, my dad gave a score of 7, and I said 5.  The final food score then is =(6+6+7+5)/4 = 6.

The new system allows for a bit more objectivity in ratings and helps us break ties and highlight subtle differences between dining experiences.  Also, the removal of smiley faces makes the site look a lot cleaner.

And, here is the key:

Scores of 8 to 10 = Fantastic!
Scores of 6 up to 8 = Good Stuff!
Scores of 4 up to 6 = Just OK.
Scores of 3 up to 4 = Meh.
Scores below 3 = Avoid.

Goodbye Smileys.. we’ll miss you.  You’ll always be 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 in my eyes.

MySA Food Flashes: S.A. restaurants not world worthy?

The MySA Food Flashes blog reports that the fourth edition of Zagat’s “World’s Top Restaurants” has been released and doesn’t include any San Antonio or nearby restaurants.  Houston and Dallas have more than 20 listings each.  In my limited time here, I can see why Houston would have more than 20 listings and San Antonio none. There are a handful of great places here (for instance, Biga on the Banks and Gwendolyn), but cities like Houston have a much more developed dining scene.. and a whole lot less of a taste for chains. But, San Antonio is growing – I think we’ll get there!

Trendsetter Alert! Social House International

Since I have entirely too much time to eat and write reviews, I am also a member of Yelp Elite.  Sometimes I get notes through Yelp informing me of neat events.  About a month ago, I got a note from Social House International, an underground dining restaurant.  I was intrigued.  J and I planned to go to the inaugural dinner, but things were not going our way and we couldn’t make it.  Luckily, I stayed in touch with Chef Andrew and we will be attending the Christmas dinner on December 16.  Cannot wait! Texas Monthly Gives San Antonio Rave Reviews on Breakfast

I frequently read the food section of www.mysa.com, and I was thrilled to see the headline “S.A. gets raves for its breakfasts,” because so far, my experience with breakfasts in SA has been less than stellar.  Texas Monthly compiled a list of the 40 best breakfast places in all of Texas and a bunch in San Antonio received kudos?  Woohoo!

But, as soon as I got to the second paragraph, my hopes dimmed. Continue reading
