Every couple of weeks, we go to dinner with friends of ours and alternate the restaurant choice. After a stinker on our part, our friends suggested Frederick’s for a special occasion, my birthday :). We’ve heard that Frederick’s is fabulous so we were excited about their choice. Frederick’s is touted as a Franco-Vietnamese restaurant. Truly, it seemed much more French than Vietnamese to me, but the food was delicious just the same. Continue reading

Little Aussie Bakery: Pretty Good for Gluten-Free
But thank God I don’t have Celiac’s disease. I was missing my Houston favorite, Empire Cafe, so I searched Yelp and Urbanspoon and it seemed like Little Aussie Bakery would be a good substitute. A hippie-ish feel in a yuppy-ish part of town – yayyyy! Well, I didn’t read the parts about how it’s a gluten-free establishment. In fact, you cannot even bring in any items that might have gluten in them (not that I carry around a pile of donuts and buns). I guess people with gluten sensitivities will steal your baked goods and eat them? Or the gluten dust will turn them into stone? Not sure. Continue reading
Cocktails with a Cause: The San Antonio Cocktail Conference
A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine told me he was volunteering at the San Antonio Cocktail Conference. I was intrigued.. this sounded like a great volunteer opportunity – especially if appreciation was paid in cocktails! I checked out the website and learned that the four-day event was modeled on the Manhattan Cocktail Classic and New Orleans’ Tales of the Cocktail event. Yay – a little bit of the big city right here in San Antonio! And the best part is that the event benefits HeartGift, a group of surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, medical personnnel, volunteers, and host families dedicated to providing life-saving heart surgery to disadvantaged children living in developing countries. Grease ‘n Cheese at Chris Madrid’s
Someone please tell me: Is there a good burger in this city? The two burger places that are frequently recommended to us are Longhorn Cafe (previously reviewed) and Chris Madrid’s. I am not the biggest fan of either, but Chris Madrid’s is definitely my less favorite of the two. However, judging by the crowd at this place, I am definitely in the minority. Chris Madrid’s is, I am told, a San Antonio institution. I can’t figure out why. To be fair, J does really like this place, but I have a feeling it’s because it reminds him of his old college days. What’s Cookin’ in Auden’s Kitchen
We have been wanting to try out Auden’s Kitchen for a while now because we really love Bruce Auden’s other restaurant, Biga on the Banks. J’s brother was in town and we were looking for a place that had a nice variety of dishes — and Auden’s Kitchen fit the bill. As soon as we walked in, I knew we would like it. Continue reading
