Perfection at Pam’s Patio Kitchen

much needed

J was working late, so we decided to go out for a quick dinner.  I was craving one of my Houston faves, Ruggles Green.  San Antonio doesn’t seem to have the same appreciation for organic and locally grown foods yet (I think that will come in time!)  I figured we could find a nice, casual place with a good variety and a decent selection of wine.  I referred to the restaurant list my co-workers gave me and Pam’s Patio sounded cute, so I doubled checked it out on Yelp.  Sounded yummy and we liked the idea of a nice outdoor patio (even though it was too chilly that day to sit outside!) Sprouts: Because you can’t eat out every day

We have eaten out many times before I started chronicling our dining experiences, and sometimes you just get sick and tired of eating out.  Cooking in our kitchen is not at all appealing because its about 15 sq ft.  You can barely turn around in there, let alone cook.  And forget about it if you have to do laundry too!  The washer and dryer are tucked in at the end of the kitchen behind folding doors.

Anyway, we decided that we would eat in more this week.  I like Central Market in Houston, but the one here is 20+ minutes away.  That’s a long way to get to the grocery store!  I have tried the HEB on De Zavala and I-10 a couple times, but I just don’t like it.  But, this week, we got an ad for Sprouts.  Apparently, it’s the old Sun Harvest market off of Callaghan. MmmmMyron’s

We love steak.  I wish I could be vegetarian, I really do.  But, I love steak too much.  In Houston, we would frequent Del Frisco’s…  the steak was perfectly done every time, and had a nice light bit of butter on it (not like Ruth’s Chris where your steak is floating in butter… I love butter, but it can be a bit much)

Any way, we have tried a couple steak places here… Ruth’s Chris (yum, but lots of butter) and Ounce (eh, it’s ok).  Overall we were less than impressed.  One of my co-workers recommended Myron’s.  There is a location in New Braunfels, and the owner, Bill Been, just opened another location at the corner of NW Military and Wurzbach. Roll on Over to Sushi Zushi

Roll on over! Get it?!  One thing that’s proving hard to get used to is that many restaurants are in strip malls.  We are missing out on some great places because we generally shy away from strip mall joints.

Years ago, when I was on a work assignment in San Antonio, I used to go to the downtown Sushi Zushi.  We were craving sushi today and I quickly googled Sushi Zushi and found that there was a location really close to our home.  Yay!  So, we set about driving there and missed it!  Then we circled back around and saw the sign.  Tucked in the back of a nondescript strip mall was Sushi Zushi.  We walked in and were pleasantly surprised by the modern and trendy decor.  My little yuppie heart was racing and I was hoping that finally we had found a delicious sushi place! Z Tejas: No Bueno

J got home from work late and I didn’t feel like cooking, so we decided to go to La Cantera, do a little window shopping and grab a bite to eat.  The first place we passed was Z Tejas, and we were immediately attracted to it because of the great patio and lively crowd.  One look at the menu and we were sold – steaks, pasta, fish, yum!

We were seated right away and I was excited to take a closer peek at the menu.  The tagline of Z Tejas is “Fresh. Flavorful. Innovative.,” so we couldn’t wait to try the food.  After the drinks were brought out, a nice griddle of corn bread was brought out… a nice touch.  On the waiter’s recommendation, I ordered the entree size wedge salad with seared beef tenderloin.  J ordered the chorizo-stuffed pork tenderloin.  Both sound delicious right? But, no. Continue reading
